Cropping

What is Cropping?

Different cameras capture photos in different aspect ratios (the ratio of the width to the height of the image). Often this does not fit a print size and thus while printing some part of the original photo has to be cropped (cut). For example, a photo which fits a 4" x 6" print well, may not fit an 8" x 10" print equally well - look at the following image and how it would print in a 4" x 6" and 8" x 10" size.

The original image, taken with a Canon Powershot S50.

To fit a 4" x 6" Print top and bottom areas had to be trimmed.

To fit a 8" x 10" Print left and right areas had to be trimmed.

How can I control which area of my image will be cropped?

We have recently introduced cropping controls so that you can specify how your images will be cropped. You can specify a crop setting for an image in the thumbnail view of your photos as well as from the Shopping Cart. Just point your mouse pointer over the image and your image will open in a popup window as shown below.

The GREEN area is the part which will be cropped.

You can move the print area around to specify what part this should be.

By default, your images will be centered and excess area cropped (if you don't specify a crop setting).

How do I prevent my images from being cropped?

You can prevent your images from being cropped by adding a padding to your image so that it fills the print area. Just tick 'No Cropping' in the popup shown or from the Shopping Cart, and a black or white padding will be added as per your choice. To change Padding Color click on the small squares next to the No Cropping checkbox.

Selecting 'No Cropping' adds a padding (border) around the image to fit the print area.

Can I specify a single crop setting for all my photos?

Yes you can specify a single crop setting for all your photos from the Shopping Cart. Select 'Zoom and Trim'(Image will be centered and extra area cropped) or 'No Cropping' (Padding will be added). These settings will not apply to images where you have specified yourself what area is to be cropped.
